Desormeaux Named to Four Mounts at Santa Anita in Return From Injury
Six weeks after suffering multiple skull and facial fractures when dumped by Judge Hammer in a race at Hollywood Park, Kent Desormeaux will return to action Friday at Santa Anita.
The nation’s leading jockey in 1992 and one of three finalists for the Eclipse Award, Desormeaux was named on four horses when entries were taken Wednesday morning for Friday. Santa Anita postponed racing Wednesday and today because of the recent rains. Since the meeting opened on Dec. 26, the track has received nearly 20 inches of rain.
Desoremaux had planned to resume riding last week but decided to wait until the weather cleared and the track dried. Two of the four horses Desormeaux will ride are trained by Bob Hess, with whom he has enjoyed a great deal of success.
In addition to the Hess pair--Boss of Bosses in the ninth race and Slerp in the Ack Ack Handicap--Desormeaux will be aboard Shrewd Vixen in the fifth and Stalcreek in the featured Santa Ysabel Stakes.
Winner of two of her three starts for trainer David Bernstein, Stalcreek is the co-highweight at 121 pounds with Voluptuous in the $81,900 Santa Ysabel, which will be run at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt.
