An Antioch Senior High School student was stabbed and doused with a flammable liquid by another student during class Thursday morning, authorities said.

Antioch police said Alvaro Eugenio Pena, 18, apparently entered a classroom about 9:15 a.m. and attacked a 15-year-old girl.

No other students were injured, said Antioch Unified School District Supt. Alan Newell. The students’ relationship and Pena’s motive were unclear, he said, adding, “I’m calling it a rather bizarre incident at this time.”

According to Sgt. Rick Clark, Pena stabbed the student and doused her with a flammable liquid, but was unable to ignite the substance. The suspect fled the school but was arrested a short time later.

The victim, whose identity was not immediately available, was listed in satisfactory condition at John Muir Hospital with superficial stab wounds in the upper torso, said Vicki Davis, a hospital nursing supervisor.
