Bernard King’s Comeback Hits a Snag; Bullets Release Him

The Washington Bullets released 36-year-old Bernard King on Thursday, saying he did not fit in with their plan to rebuild with youth.

King has been inactive since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in September, 1991. Last week, the 6-foot-7 forward demanded that the team either reactivate or cut him.

Coach Wes Unseld announced his decision several hours after practice Thursday.

“In light of the fact that we have made a significant commitment to the future of this team, we felt this was the best decision to make at this time,” Unseld said in a prepared statement. “This should no way diminish Bernard King’s outstanding contributions to this team over the past five years.”

King, who insists his knee is in excellent condition, is free to negotiate with any NBA club. He is also guaranteed the $2.5 million the Bullets promised him this season.

Last week King clashed with Unseld at practice, reportedly shoving the coach and calling him a “thug.” The Bullets suspended King, and he returned to practice Wednesday.
