Former Mayor Gene Leyton was appointed Friday to serve out the remainder of Councilman Carrey J. Nelson’s term on the Brea Redevelopment Agency.

In a 10-minute special meeting, the City Council voted 4 to 1 to fill the post Nelson vacated on Jan. 7. Leyton will serve until 1994.

Councilwoman Kathryn E. Wiser cast the lone vote against Leyton. She had nominated resident Sal Gambino Leyton was appointed to the City Council in November, 1985, when then-Councilman Sam Cooper died. He won the seat in the November, 1986, election and served as mayor in 1988, but he did not seek reelection when his term expired in 1990.

Until this month, Leyton was chairman of the Brea Foundation, a nonprofit organization that manages the Brea Mall.

Mayor Burnie Dunlap said that former Mayor Wayne D. Wedin declined consideration for the Redevelopment Agency post because of personal reasons.

Dunlap also said that former Mayors Norma Hicks, Clarice Blamer and John Sutton declined to be considered.

Members of the council usually sit as Redevelopment Agency members, and Leyton’s appointment marks the first time that a non-council member has become a Redevelopment Agency member.
