COLLEGE BASKETBALL PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : Cougars Surprise Beavers

Tony Harris led a second-half Washington State comeback with 16 points as the Cougars defeated Oregon State, 56-51, Saturday night at Pullman, Wash., handing the Beavers their first Pacific-10 Conference loss.

Harris, who scored all his points in the second half, sealed the victory with two free throws to give the Cougars a five-point lead with 1:28 remaining.

Mark Hendrickson’s slam-dunk with 13:08 to go made the score 35-33 and put Washington State (8-6 overall, 2-3 Pac-10) ahead for good.

Hendrickson finished with 11 points. Bennie Seltzer and Eddie Hill each added 13.

Mustapha Hoff scored 17 points to lead Oregon State (9-6, 5-1). Chad Scott and Charles McKinney each added 11 for the Beavers.

The Cougars held Oregon State’s leading scorer, Scott Haskin, to seven points, 11 points below his season average.

Washington 70, Oregon 53--Prentiss Perkins scored a career-high 22 points and Mark Pope added 19 points and 13 rebounds at Seattle as Washington continued Oregon’s Pac-10 woes.

The Ducks (7-11, 0-6) lost their 15th consecutive conference game and had their Pac-10 road losing streak extended to 17 games.

Washington (8-6, 2-3) pulled ahead after a 30-30 halftime tie and a 38-37 lead with 12:51 left in the game.

Perkins, Washington’s starting point guard, was seven for 13 from the floor, including two of four from three-point range.

Rich Manning, Washington’s center and leading scorer with a 16.9 average, was held to seven points on three-of-12 shooting. Antoine Stoudamire, Oregon’s top scorer with a 17.2 average, was limited to four points on one-of-seven shooting. He missed three three-point attempts.

Washington, breaking a three-game losing streak, had a 48-28 rebounding advantage.
