Super Bowl XXVII : THROUGH THE YEARS : Footnotes To History : XXIV : MIKE COFER : SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Share

In Super Bowl XXIV, a crowd of 72,919 at the Superdome watched the 49ers run over the Denver Broncos, 55-10. Those 55 points remain the most scored by one team. It was also a record-setting day for Mike Cofer.

The 49er kicker broke the Super Bowl mark by kicking seven extra points. It is a fine record, to be sure, and Cofer gets a kick out it. Sort of.

“It’s really not a big deal, not even a big personal deal,” Cofer said. “They keep statistics and records of everything. I think anybody who’s ever played in a Super Bowl game has a record for something. Like how many times you tied your shoes.”

Cofer is wrong about that one. There are categories for only 83 individual Super Bowl records in the books.

Besides all the extra points required, when your team scores eight touchdowns, as the 49ers did, the kicker is extra busy. Even with all the kicking and running around he did, Cofer said his feet never got that sore.

“Well, the eight kickoffs were a little tough,” Cofer said. “I was getting a little worn out. I told the guys, ‘I’ll kick extra points all day long. I’m not looking for any glory, any 50-yard field goals.’ ”

Cofer’s record could have been eight, but he missed one extra point, pushing his kick wide after the 49ers’ second touchdown, and San Francisco had to settle for a 13-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Actually, Cofer said, he was only trying to inject a bit of drama into the game.

“I was feeling sorry for the Broncos,” he said.

“I was trying to give them a little bit of hope. . . . Sure I was. It wasn’t an ugly kick. It just didn’t go in. Those things happen. Mine just happened in the Super Bowl. But it was, what, 27-3 at the half? So my missed extra point was quickly forgotten.”
