There was little doubt the Iowa Hawkeyes played Sunday’s game against No. 5-ranked Michigan for Chris Street’s family.

After Val Barnes dribbled out the last seconds of Iowa’s 88-80 Big Ten Conference victory at Iowa City, the Hawkeyes rushed to where Street’s parents, Mike and Patty, were sitting. The players hugged the Streets and gave them the game ball.

“We’ll probably have Chris on our minds all year long,” freshman Kenyon Murray said. “You’re not going to see games where this team is not going to play hard.”

It was Iowa’s first home game since Street was killed Jan. 19 in a three-vehicle crash in Iowa City. The team postponed two games that week, then returned to action last Thursday night with a 96-90 overtime victory against Michigan State after trailing by 15 points with a little more than three minutes to play in regulation.

Sunday’s victory improved Iowa’s record to 14-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten.

A picture of Chris Street graced the cover of the program that was sold to the 15,500 fans who packed Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where staffers wore black and gold patches with the insignia, “CMS 40,” signifying Street’s initials and jersey number.

The crowd observed 15 seconds of silence in Street’s memory before the tipoff but provided the Hawkeyes with several moments of loud cheers throughout the game. Michigan (16-3, 5-2) could not hold on after leading, 75-73, with less than four minutes to play.

The Wolverines turned the ball over five times against Iowa’s full-court pressure in the final 2:49.

Barnes scored 27 points for Iowa, and Acie Earl finished with 19. Jalen Rose scored 19 points for Michigan.

Syracuse 76, No. 9 Seton Hall 67--Seton Hall is still winless in the Carrier Dome and has not defeated Syracuse on the road since the 1950-51 season.
