Temple City : Council Rejects Land Sale

The City Council voted 3 to 2 Tuesday against a proposal that would allow an education foundation to sell part of its vacant property for residential development.

The council rejected the proposal on the grounds that it would require an amendment to the General Plan, which governs development in the city.

Pacific Ackworth Foundation wanted to sell nearly two acres of its 4 1/2-acre parcel, zoned for medium- and high-density institutional use, to a developer who wants to build seven single-family homes.

“Some high-density, much more lucrative project is right behind this one,” resident Matt Weaver said in support of the foundation proposal.

Pacific Ackworth Chairwoman Sherri Gust said the foundation intended to use funds from the sale to upgrade its buildings and a preschool on the property on Temple City Boulevard.

Several opponents of the development urged the council to consider acquiring the land for use as a park. But Councilman Thomas Breazeal said that even if the city were offered the land, it could not afford to buy it.
