Norwalk : Recycling Will Be Tested in Northeast Neighborhood

Share

Residents in a northeast section of Norwalk will be able to recycle newspapers, cardboard, glass, cans and plastic bottles starting June 1 in a six-month pilot program approved Tuesday by the City Council.

Jackson Disposal Service, which collects trash in 20% of the city, will offer recycling to 385 single-family homes and the Silverado Oaks condominiums in an area bounded by Norwalk Boulevard, Imperial Highway, Bloomfield Avenue and Lakeland Road. There will be no increase in the trash rate of $35.03 for three months of service.

Jackson Disposal will supply 15-gallon containers that will be picked up on regular trash collection days. All recyclables may be put in the container except newspapers and cardboard, which must be stacked separately.

The experimental program, which will continue through Nov. 30, is intended to determine public interest in recycling and the effectiveness of the collection system as Norwalk faces a state mandate to divert 25% of its waste from landfills by 1995 and 50% by 2000.
