PACOIMA : School Petitions for ‘Charter’ Status

Officials at Vaughn Street Elementary School in Pacoima formally submitted their petition Thursday to Los Angeles Unified School District officials in a bid to become one of the state’s autonomous “charter” campuses.

A day after faculty members voted to approve the petition--an ambitious proposal outlining what the school would do if it were exempt from state and local educational regulations--school officials delivered the document to the seven members of the school board, Supt. Sid Thompson and the district’s Office of Instruction, which handles incoming petitions.

A committee of district staff members is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss the petition. Vaughn school officials will then have an opportunity to address any concerns raised by the district. Under the state charter school law, the school board must also hold a public hearing on the petition within 30 days of receiving it.

Thirty-one teachers out of a 42-member faculty voted Wednesday to seek status as a charter school.
