Harry Edwards and other civil rights leaders agreed that the one-year suspension and fine of Cincinnati Reds’ owner Marge Schott by baseball is less important than the sport making progress in minority issues.
“It has no impact in terms of the basic problem of racism and discriminatory attitudes in baseball,” said Edwards, a black sociology professor at the University of California and a longtime activist on racial issues. “There was a hesitation to make any statement dealing with the problem of broad representation of minorities in baseball. There was no statement concerning that problem.”
