Steve Guild scored 16 points, including two free throws with 25 seconds left in the second overtime, as Pepperdine defeated Santa Clara, 73-71, in a West Coast Conference game Thursday night at Santa Clara.

“It was a tremendous team effort, and I am thrilled that we survived and picked up a road win,” Pepperdine Coach Tom Asbury said.

Dana Jones and Byron Jenson each scored 16 points for the Waves, who remained in first place in the WCC at 6-1 and are 15-4 overall. Santa Clara fell to 3-4 and 9-10.

Santa Clara twice extended the game with three-point shots as time was about to expire. John Woolery made a three-pointer with seven seconds in regulation to tie the score, 60-60, and DeWayne Lewis made a three-pointer with four seconds left to tie, 67-67, in the first overtime.

Santa Clara tied a school record with 11 three-point baskets, but the Broncos shot only 37.3% from the field and were outrebounded, 43-37. Jones had 14 rebounds for Pepperdine.

“We came up with some big plays down the stretch, as did Santa Clara with some key three-point baskets,” Asbury said. “I’m glad we have a day off before we play Saturday night at San Diego. We need the rest.”

After Jenson gave Pepperdine a 70-68 lead with a tipin with 1:49 remaining in the second overtime, Mark Schmitz had a chance to tie the game on the foul line. He made his first three throw but missed his second. Guild then made two free throws for a 72-69 lead with 25 seconds to go.

After a missed three-point attempt by Santa Clara, Pepperdine’s Bryan Parker made a free throw to clinch the victory.
