COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Catala Injured in UC Irvine Loss to UNLV

The UC Irvine women’s basketball team lost another game--100-71 to Nevada Las Vegas--and its leading scorer to a knee injury Thursday in Las Vegas.

Yvonne Catala injured her knee in the second half of the loss to the Runnin’ Rebels. Catala, averaging 12.7 points and 9.4 rebounds, was taken to a Las Vegas hospital for further examination after the game.

Karie Yoshioka and Cher Scanlon each scored 17 points for Irvine (1-16, 0-9). Teresa Jackson led UNLV (15-1, 9-0) with 33 points.

In another Big West Conference game:

New Mexico State 65, UC Irvine 62--Allison Jackson scored 20 points and Heidi James and Shayla Bradshaw added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Titans (4-12, 2-8).

New Mexico State (11-8, 7-5) was led by Anita Maxwell with 21 points.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball:

Cal State San Bernardino 90, Chapman 66--Jeff Gardner had 17 points and Richie Bethune had 15 for the visiting Panthers (5-15, 2-6).

In nonconference baseball:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 2, Southern California College 1 (11)--Greg Bergeron scored from third on a wild pitch in the top of the 11th for visiting Dominguez Hills (2-0). Ken Turner hit a home run in the sixth inning for host SCC (0-1).

St. Mary’s 8, Chapman 2--Trevor Rush went three for three for host Chapman (1-1).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 6, Biola 3--At No. 1 singles, Aaron Webster defeated Jon Harms, 6-4, 6-3, for SCC (3-0).

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Loyola Marymount 2--Cory Crigger posted a victory at No. 2 singles and then teamed up with Ali Yoshimoto for a win at No. 1 doubles for UC Irvine (1-2).

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Loyola Marymount 3, UC Irvine 2--Loyola Marymount rallied to win the last two games.
