Countywide : S. African Diplomat to Address Group

Share

Harry Heinz Schwarz, the South African ambassador to the United States and a longtime foe of apartheid, will be the featured speaker at a meeting Tuesday of the World Affairs Council of Ventura County.

A lawyer and human rights activist, Schwarz is the first South African politician from opposition ranks to be appointed to a senior ambassadorial post in that nation’s history. He is a member of the South Africa’s liberal Democratic Party.

Cindy Cooke, executive director of the World Affairs Council, said Schwarz’s presentation will cover current policies of the South African government, recent outbreaks of violence in the country, and negotiations to develop a democratic constitution. After his speech, she said, Schwarz will field questions from the audience.
