Man Badly Burned in Body Shop Fire

An employee of a Van Nuys body shop was badly burned Saturday after a flash fire broke out inside the shop, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
The victim, a 49-year-old man, was taken to Sherman Oaks Hospital and Health Center, where he was listed in serious condition with burns over 30% of his body, Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said.
Five fire companies fought the blaze at Van Nuys Auto Body, 6050 Van Nuys Blvd., and contained the fire a short time later.
Collis said paramedics found the employee, who was the only person in the shop, wandering outside the business. The man told firefighters he had been siphoning gas from a car inside the shop when the fire occurred.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
