Notes on a Scorecard - Feb. 10, 1993

I wonder who the University of California basketball players will pick to succeed Lou Campanelli as coach. . . .

With UCLA, USC and Cal State Long Beach fading, Pepperdine could be the only local team to reach the NCAA basketball tournament. . . .

UCLA Coach Jim Harrick told the McDonnell-Douglas show on KMPC that he has caused many of his problems by making statements he later regretted. . . .

Bill Walton was good enough to be voted into the basketball Hall of Fame on Monday, but where would he be ranked among the all-time greats if his NBA career hadn’t been hampered by injuries? . . .

Walton missed four entire seasons because of injuries, didn’t play more than 67 games in any season until he was way past his prime in 1985-86 with the Boston Celtics and even missed 17 games with the 1976-77 NBA champion Portland Trail Blazers. . . .

Among centers, Bill Russell and Walton were the ultimate team players. . . .

You can win a friendly wager by insisting that Russell’s Boston Celtic teammate Bob Cousy never shot as high as 40% from the field during a season. . . .

Standards have been lowered at the Forum when the Lakers need overtime to beat the Dallas Mavericks and Coach Randy Pfund says, “It’s huge to get over this hump.” . . .

The injury to Golden State Warrior star Chris Mullin damages the Lakers’ chances of qualifying for the draft lottery. . . .

What happened to the art of following up a shot? Most outside shooters just stand there and admire their work, whether the ball goes in or not. . . .

If balloting were conducted today, the San Antonio Spurs’ John Lucas would be NBA coach of the year. . . .

Of course, if balloting had been conducted two months ago, the Kings’ Barry Melrose would have been NHL coach of the year. . . .

The Dodgers will take a long look at relief pitcher Todd Williams during spring training. . . .

Williams, 22, is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander with a submarine delivery who was 4-1 with an 0.42 earned-run average in the Arizona Winter League. A 54th-round draft pick in 1990, he was 7-4 with a 3.48 ERA and 13 saves for San Antonio of the Texas League last season. . . .

College World Series runner-up Cal State Fullerton will play traditional power Florida State on Feb. 28 in the featured game of the Anaheim Hilton and Towers Baseball Classic at Titan Field. Chapman and Gonzaga round out the field in the round-robin format Feb. 26-28. . . .

The only heavyweight fighter who ate more than Michael Dokes last week in New York was George Foreman, who devoured a huge pastrami and American cheese sandwich with mayonnaise on wheat toast at a deli--and then ordered another. . . .

“I’m not a dessert man,” Foreman said. “I’m a sandwich man.” . . .

Julian Jackson hurt his hand and is off the card, so Michael Nunn will defend his World Boxing Assn. super-middleweight championship against Danny Morgan Feb. 20 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. . . .

Local heavyweight prospect David Dixon will face a well-known opponent March 22 at the Forum, but, unfortunately, it’s washed-up Tyrell Biggs. . . .

After Kent Desormeaux rode two winners for Bob Hess on Saturday, the trainer said: “It isn’t until Kent’s gone that you realize how good he really is. His ability to get horses to run in a whole new dimension just amazes me.” . . .

Mario Lemieux, who has sat out 14 games, is still way ahead in the NHL scoring race. . . .

Only two more years until the America’s Cup. . . .

According to an NCAA study, 61% of football injuries last season occurred in practice and 39% in games. . . .

Former Raider Bob Golic will portray a football player who is suffering from cancer because of steroid usage on an episode of “Coach” Feb. 23 on ABC. . . .

Howie Long’s two sacks Sunday gave him nine in Pro Bowl games, high for the AFC since the statistic was first kept in 1982. . . .

The Los Angeles Sports Council plans to bid for the 1998 Super Bowl on behalf of the Rose Bowl and/or Coliseum. . . .

I assume Troy Aikman got early boarding Sunday in Honolulu. . . .

It’s doubtful that Bobby Humphrey will be voted AFC player of the week.
