Danny Manning was selected for an NBA All-Star berth Tuesday when the league announced reserves for the Feb. 21 game at Salt Lake City.

And for the first time in the 42-year history of the game, neither the Boston Celtics nor the Lakers, with a combined 27 NBA championships, will have an all-star.

In fact, the only times only one of the two teams was represented on the all-star team were in 1978, when no Laker was selected, and 1979, when no Celtic was selected.

The string began with George Mikan, Jim Pollard and Vern Mikkelsen of the Lakers and Ed Macauley and Bob Cousy of the Celtics in the first All-Star Game, on March 2, 1951 in Boston.

It continued through the Laker eras of Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson. The Celtic run was marked by Bill Russell, John Havlicek, K.C. Jones, Dave Cowens and Larry Bird.

Unlike baseball and hockey, the NBA and NFL do not require that each team be represented at their All-Star games. The Celtics and Lakers were among 10 of the 27 NBA franchises which failed to have an all-star representative.

Among the 15 players selected as backups by coaches in the East and West Conferences are four other players making their all-star debuts, including Detlef Schrempf of the Indiana Pacers, who is the first European player selected.

Others picked for the first time were Sean Elliott of the San Antonio Spurs, Shawn Kemp of the Seattle SuperSonics and Mitch Richmond of the Sacramento Kings, who will play for the West.

Also named as East reserves were Joe Dumars of the Detroit Pistons, Patrick Ewing of the New York Knicks, Dominique Wilkins of the Atlanta Hawks and three Cleveland Cavalier teammates--Mark Price, Brad Daugherty and Larry Nance.

Joining the four all-star rookies as West backups were Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway of Golden State, Dan Majerle of Phoenix and Hakeem Olajuwon of Houston. Mullin will not play because of an injury to his right thumb.

Earlier, fan balloting elected Chicago’s Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, Detroit’s Isiah Thomas, Charlotte’s Larry Johnson and Orlando’s Shaquille O’Neal to start for the East and Utah’s John Stockton and Karl Malone, Portland’s Clyde Drexler, Phoenix’s Charles Barkley and San Antonio’s David Robinson as West starters.

Pat Riley of the New York Knicks and Paul Westphal of the Phoenix Suns will coach the teams.
