COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Willcox, Puckett Spark Antelope Valley to Win

Brian Willcox collected 15 assists to lead Antelope Valley College to a 79-71 Foothill Conference basketball victory over Mt. San Jacinto on Wednesday in Lancaster.

Willcox, a sophomore from Las Vegas, also scored seven points. John Puckett, a sophomore from Chicago, scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Marauders (20-8, 9-4 in conference play).

Mt. San Jacinto is 21-6, 8-3

In other men’s basketball games:

Cal Lutheran 78, Claremont-Mudd 72--Rupert Sapwell and Paul Tapp combined for 37 points to help the Kingsmen trip up the Stags in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Claremont.

Sapwell finished with a game-high 19 points, one better than Tapp. Kelly Crosby was next for CLU with 14 points.

CLU improved to 16-4, 8-1; Claremont-Mudd is 7-12, 3-6.

Santa Monica 100, Valley 85--The Corsairs’ full-court press forced numerous Monarch turnovers early and helped six players score in double figures.

Valley, 7-19, 2-5 in Western State Conference South Division play, pulled to within four points midway through the second half but was too fatigued to match up with Santa Monica under the boards.

Wayne Carlisle had 26 points, Anthony Jackson 24 and Robert McGee 22 for Valley.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 109, Compton 27--Cori Herman made six of eight three-point shots and scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Pirates (21-4, 13-0) in a WSC North Division game.

Ventura, which is ranked sixth in the state, outscored Compton, 51-15, in the first half. Jennifer Wells scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Pirates. Ventura reserve Becky Bennett scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Valley 48, Santa Monica 37--Rosa Mendez scored a season-low six points but the Monarchs managed to overcome that to win a WSC South Division game. Mendez contributed six assists and seven steals for Valley (26-4, 12-1).

Amy Horst led the Monarchs, which are ranked ninth in the state, with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Pierce 76, Glendale 74--Yolanda Davidian scored a career-high 39 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Pierce.

Michelle Brewer and Kim Guildner combined for 13 assists as the Brahmas improved to 7-17, 3-10 in the WSC South Division.

Antelope Valley 69, Victor Valley 57--Sasha Garrison led the Marauders with game highs of 20 points and 19 rebounds in a Foothill Conference game. Bernice Atkinson scored 16 points and nine rebounds as Antelope Valley (14-11, 6-3) outrebounded Victor Valley, 69-37.

BASEBALL

The Master’s 14, Christ College 6--Kevin Backes was three for four with a home run and a double to lead host Master’s (3-1) in an NAIA District III opener.
