Six Arkansas players scored in double figures, but Coach Nolan Richardson said his list of heroes started with some other folks.

“The fans won this one for us,” Richardson said Wednesday night after the 14th-ranked Razorbacks held off No. 2 Kentucky, 101-94, in a Southeastern Conference game at Fayetteville, Ark. “We have the kind of team that if we get an extra push from the fans, it makes a big difference.”

Arkansas (16-4, 7-3) was led by Robert Shepherd’s 20 points. Jamal Mashburn scored 20 for Kentucky (17-2, 8-2).

No. 3 Duke 73, Georgia Tech 63--The Blue Devils started the second half with a 10-2 run to break open a close game and beat the Yellow Jackets in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Durham, N.C.

Thomas Hill scored a season-high 26 points and had six of the points in the run that sparked Duke (19-3, 7-3), which won despite an off-night shooting by Bobby Hurley, who finished with four points.

Georgia Tech (12-7, 5-5), which beat Duke when it was No. 1 earlier in the season, was never closer than eight points over the final seven minutes. Travis Best led the Yellow Jackets with 13 points.

No. 4 Michigan 85, Wisconsin 66--Chris Webber scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half to help the Wolverines hand the Badgers their 11th consecutive loss in a Big Ten game at Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Wolverines (19-3, 8-2) broke the game open with a 20-5 run midway through the second half after Michael Finley scored six of his 25 points to help give Wisconsin (12-6, 5-4) a 49-42 lead.

No. 7 Kansas 84, Oklahoma State 72--Rex Walters led a 21-3 second-half charge and the Jayhawks overcame a bad first half to beat the Cowboys at Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas, 19-3 overall and 6-1 in the Big Eight, missed its first 11 shots and made only eight of 36 as Oklahoma State led, 33-29, at halftime.

Walters, who led the Jayhawks with 18 points, made a three-point basket to start the second half and ignited the 21-3 run. The Cowboys (13-5, 4-4) were led by Bryant Reeves’ 26 points.

No. 8 Cincinnati 55, No. 15 Marquette 53--Erik Martin took a perfect pass from Nick Van Exel and laid it in with one second left to give the Bearcats a victory at Cincinnati and end the Warriors’ winning streak at 10 games.

Marquette, 17-3 overall and 5-1 in the Great Midwest Conference, overcame a five-point deficit in the closing minutes, tying the score, 53-53, on Roney Eford’s 12-foot jump shot with 25 seconds left.

Martin led Cincinnati (18-2, 5-1) with 16 points.

No. 10 Florida State 111, No. 9 Wake Forest 94--Sam Cassell scored 25 points at Tallahassee, Fla., to help lead the Seminoles into a share of first place in the ACC.

The Seminoles won for the 10th time in 11 games and ended Wake Forest’s winning streak at seven games. Florida State (18-6, 8-2) moved back into a first-place tie with North Carolina in the conference.

Bob Sura scored 22 points, Douglas Edwards 21 and Rodney Dobard 19 for the Seminoles, who also got point guard Charlie Ward back after a three-game absence because of a shoulder injury.

Rodney Rogers led Wake Forest (15-4, 6-3) with 26 points and Randolph Childress had 22.

No. 11 Vanderbilt 89, Mississippi 59--Billy McCaffrey scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half as the Commodores won a Southeastern Conference game at Nashville, Tenn.

The victory by Vanderbilt (18-4, 8-2) put the Commodores into a tie with Kentucky in the SEC’s Eastern Division.

Mississippi (7-12, 3-7) was led by Joe Harvell’s 19 points.

No. 18 Purdue 75, Minnesota 69--Glenn Robinson had 29 points and Cuonzo Martin a career-high 25 as the Boilermakers held off the Golden Gophers in a Big Ten game at West Lafayette, Ind.

Purdue (14-5, 5-5) survived two spurts by a stubborn Minnesota team, which had defeated the Boilermakers by 21 points in their earlier meeting.

Minnesota (12-7, 4-6) overcame a 12-point deficit to take the lead in the first half and cut a 14-point deficit to four in the second half before fading.

No. 23 Kansas State 68, Iowa State 66--Anthony Beane’s shot in the lane with one second left in overtime lifted the Wildcats to a Big Eight victory at Manhattan, Kan.

Forward Aaron Collier scored six of his 10 points for Kansas State (15-4, 5-2), which did not trail in overtime. trailed. Iowa State (14-7, 4-4) was led by Julius Michalik’s 14 points. Askia Jones led Kansas State with 21 points.

Miami 75, No. 21 Boston College 71--Constantin Popa made three hook shots in the final three minutes and Miami won its third consecutive Big East game, at Miami.

Miami (8-11, 5-6) has lost only one game at home this season. The Hurricanes kept Boston College (13-6, 7-4), which had won four in a row, from moving into first place with St. John’s.

Billy Curley led the Eagles with 17 points.
