GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Toilers Force 23 Turnovers in 60-19 Rout of Palisades

An emphasis on defense has resulted in increased offense for Manual Arts.

The Toilers forced 23 turnovers, including 13 steals, in a 60-19 Coastal Conference victory over Palisades on Friday.

Manual Arts held Palisades scoreless in the second quarter and without a field goal during a 14:48 span to open a 29-8 lead midway through the third quarter.

Manual Arts seeking its first league title in more than a decade, has limited opponents to 40 points in eight of its nine conference games.

Bertha Zuno finished with 17 points and six steals, while Twanda Cole and Jolie Kaba added 12 points.

“Last year, we were trying to score and didn’t play much defense,” Zuno said. “This year, we’re working harder on defense and playing our best.”

On Wednesday, Tynisha Jones and Ronneka Taylor scored 15 points each for the Toilers in a 61-29 conference victory over Hamilton.

Records: Manual Arts 11-2; Palisades 2-9.

Roosevelt 64, South Gate 57--The teams combined for 14 three-point baskets in a Southeastern Conference game.

Denise Caudillo scored 22 points, nine coming on three-point baskets for the visiting Roughriders.

Liz Guevara and Rosa Pantoja each made two three-point baskets, scoring 19 and 10 points for Roosevelt. Nancy Maciel had a team-high 17 points for South Gate, including five three-point baskets.

Records: Roosevelt 13-5; South Gate 16-3.

Jefferson 53, Locke 40--Kyetra Brown scored 21 points and had 16 assists, and Chaka Smith added 14 points and 12 rebounds to help the Democrats offset a 24-point performance by Locke’s Danielle Henderson in a Southeastern Conference game at home.

Records: Jefferson 19-3, Locke 4-8

Dorsey 57, Gardena 36--Jennifer Boston scored 16 points and Tamu Agiza had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the host Dons in a Southern Pacific Conference victory.

Record: Dorsey 15-6

Fremont 51, Huntington Park 35--Bresha McDaniel had 15 points and Sheila Paige and Rochelle Davis scored 12 each to propel the Pathfinders to victory in a Southeastern Conference game.

Davis and Paige also scored 23 and 16 points in a 58-54 nonconference victory at Canoga Park on Wednesday.

Records: Fremont 15-6; Huntington Park 1-12.

Carson 62, Washington 52--April Adams and Turie McCormick scored 14 and 12 points each, but the Generals squandered a nine-point first quarter lead in a Southern Pacific Conference loss.

Records: Carson 16-6; Washington 8-13.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Cal State Dominguez Hills 65, Cal State L.A. 63--Cameron Inouye missed a layup as time expired and the Golden Eagles dropped their fifth game in a row in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game Thursday.

Inouye had 18 points and five assists for Cal State L.A., which rallied from an eight-point second-half deficit. Records: Dominguez Hills 13-8; Cal State L.A. 4-17.
