SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS : GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Gibson, Christensen Pace Western’s 20-Point Victory Over Fullerton
Kwanzaa Gibson had 23 points and Genni Christensen had 20 to help Western to a 60-40 victory over Fullerton in a Division III-AA girls’ wild-card game at Western High.
Western (14-11) will play at top-seeded Inglewood Morningside Saturday. Nadia Hoerner led Fullerton with 12 points.
In Division IV-A wild-card games:
Orange Lutheran 69, Sierra Madre Alverno 46--Kristen Weddick scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for Orange Lutheran (13-11). The game was close until the fourth quarter, when Orange Lutheran outscored Alverno (12-6), 25-12. Orange Lutheran’s Lori Wright scored 12 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter.
Orange Lutheran will travel to Sun City Village Christian Saturday night for a first-round game.
Whittier Christian 49, Sierra Madre Maranatha 42--Denise Huizing had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Alana Kempton had 12 points for the visiting Heralds (15-8), who advance to play Santa Monica Crossroads, the fourth-seeded team. Maranatha finishes at 16-8.
Division V-AA wild-card game:
Capistrano Valley Christian 43, Claremont Webb 28--Ivana Kovacic had 14 points and 10 rebounds,and Heidi Elliott had 12 points and 13 rebounds for host Capistrano Valley Christian (17-6), which advances to play at fourth-seeded Encino Holy Martyrs Saturday. Webb finishes 16-5.
