An off-duty sheriff’s deputy thwarted three suspected car thieves in Sun Valley, police said Thursday.

Ruben Carrillo, 18, of Sun Valley; Hector Carrillo, 24, and Jonathan Pintor, 21, both of North Hollywood, are being held in lieu of $20,000 bail at the Foothill station on suspicion of attempted auto theft, Los Angeles Police Detective Frank Bishop said. It was not clear if the Carrillos are related, he said.

The deputy, whose name was not made public, saw three men in the 8900 block of Cayuga Avenue as they broke into a car and tried to start it about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Bishop said.

“He told them to stop,” Bishop said. “One gave up at the scene. The deputy chased the other two on foot about two or three blocks and they gave up when he cornered them.”

One of them pulled a handgun during the pursuit but did not fire, Bishop said.

“He threw down the gun when the officer cornered them,” Bishop said. “He tried to dispose of it. He threw it under a car.”
