Steve Yzerman didn’t want the 1,000th point of his career to be a cheap one.

So when Yzerman was awarded an assist on Dino Ciccarelli’s goal during the third period of the Detroit Red Wings’ 5-5 tie with the Philadelphia Flyers in a neutral-site game Monday at Richfield, Ohio, he threw it back.

“I don’t think I deserved it,” Yzerman said. “I skated past the official scorer and told him, ‘I don’t think I touched the puck.’ ”

Yzerman got his 999th point on a goal during the second period. After officials reviewed videotape, they gave Yzerman’s assist to teammate Steve Chiasson.

Matt Pavelich, NHL supervisor of officials, and two other officials looked at the tape at Yzerman’s request.

“There’s no way he touched the puck,” Pavelich said. “He said he didn’t want it.”

Ciccarelli’s goal made the score 5-3 with five minutes to play in regulation, but Philadelphia sent the game to overtime on goals by Mark Recchi and Brent Fedyk, the latter with less than a second left in regulation.

Winnipeg 6, Ottawa 3--Stu Barnes and Thomas Steen scored 54 seconds apart during the third period and the Jets ended a six-game losing streak by beating the Senators at Winnipeg.

Barnes beat goaltender Daniel Berthiaume for the goal that gave the Jets a 4-3 lead with 7:19 remaining, and Steen scored the second of his three goals less than a minute later. He added an empty-net goal with eight seconds to play.

Phil Housley assisted on four goals for the Jets, who are only 2-9-1 in their last 12 games.

Ottawa is 0-30 on the road.

New York Rangers 4, San Jose 0--Adam Oates scored his 26th and 27th goals, and John Vanbiesbrouck stopped 29 shots as the Rangers beat the Sharks in a neutral-site game at Sacramento.
