Officials Exit Panel on Freeway Extension

South Pasadena city officials, saying they want to determine what direction the Clinton Administration will take on the proposed extension of the Long Beach Freeway (710), announced Wednesday that they temporarily have withdrawn from an advisory panel charged with devising ways to lessen the roadway’s impact.

Until newly appointed Clinton transportation officials can review the controversial proposal, Mayor Harry A. Knapp said, the work of the advisory committee “should be put on hold.” South Pasadena has two representatives on the 13-member committee, and since mid-December city officials have expressed displeasure over how state and federal highway officials have responded to concerns about the project.

The panel’s next meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. today at the Pasadena Hilton.
