BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Johnson Powers No. 2 Crenshaw Past No. 14 Westchester

Kristaan Johnson, son of former NBA star Marques Johnson, scored a game-high 36 points to lead second-ranked Crenshaw to a 102-77 victory over No. 14 Westchester in a City Section Division 4-A semifinal Tuesday night at Washington High.

Johnson, a 6-foot-5 junior center, scored 22 points during the first half as the Cougars (23-2) opened a 50-34 halftime lead. Junior forward Tremaine Fowlkes added 17 for Crenshaw.

Westchester, last year’s 4-A champion, was led by Jason and Ben Sanders and Lefty Wells, each of whom scored 15 points. The Comets finished the season 22-7.

No. 4 Compton Dominguez 61, No. 19 Crescenta Valley 51--Senior guard Marcus Woods scored 10 of his 12 points during the fourth quarter as the Dons (25-2) came from behind in a Southern Section II-AA game at Cal State Long Beach. Dominguez trailed, 38-34, after three quarters. Sophomore guard Thomas Prince led the Dons with 24 points. Senior guard Adam Jacobsen led Crescenta Valley (22-5) with 27.

No. 5 Lakewood Artesia 85, No. 15 La Palma Kennedy 79--Senior forward Charles O’Bannon scored 29 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead the Pioneers (25-3) to a Southern Section II-A victory at Los Alamitos High. Center Avondre Jones added 21 points and 18 rebounds for Artesia. Kennedy finished 26-4.

South Torrance 65, No. 12 Torrance Bishop Montgomery 62--Senior guard Jimmy Williamson scored nine of his team’s final 11 points as the Spartans (26-2) upset the Knights (22-3) in a Southern Section III-AA game at North Torrance High. Second-seeded Bishop Montgomery pulled to to 54-52 with 4:30 remaining, but Williamson scored two quick baskets. Center Kyle McIntosh added 22 for the Spartans. Center Andre English led Bishop Montgomery with 25.

Dorsey 60, No. 16 Washington 57--Senior guard Terrell McKnight’s three-pointer with two seconds remaining lifted the Dons (15-10) to an upset victory over the Generals (22-4) in a City 4-A game at Gardena High. McKnight finished with 14 points. Dorsey guard Davey Fortson finished with a team-high 20 points. Washington’s Dayron Harris had 21.

No. 17 San Dimas 68, Lompoc 64--Junior guard Jeremy Veal made four free throws in the final two minutes to help the Saints (25-3) to a Southern Section III-A victory over Lompoc (21-4) at Glendora High. San Dimas went to a stall game with four minutes to play and then relied on its free-throw shooting. Lompoc was led by Malik Salim’s 29 points.

Dion Jackson scored 21 points and Andre Miller added 15 as Verbum Dei (22-4) upset top-seeded Santa Monica Crossroads (22-4) in a Southern Section IV-A game at Compton College. . . . Neal Thakur and Todd Ammons combined for 37 points as Palos Verdes Chadwick defeated Canoga Park Faith Baptist, 75-51, in a Southern Section V-AA game at Peninsula High. . . .Bryan Sterling had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Bel-Air Prep (20-7) to a 49-46 Southern Section V-A victory over Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep at St. Monica High.
