GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : No. 2 Thousand Oaks Defeats No. 14 Marina, 65-42, Stays Unbeaten

In a rematch of last year’s Southern Section Division I-A semifinal, No. 2 Thousand Oaks defeated No. 14 Marina, 65-42, in this season’s girls’ basketball I-A semifinal at Edison High.

Melissa Wood scored 21 points and Marion Jones added 18 points, 16 rebounds and two blocked shots to lead Thousand Oaks (29-0) into Saturday’s championship game.

Marina, the Sunset League champions, trailed by 26-16 after one quarter. But Thousand Oaks outscored the Vikings, 22-9, in the second quarter to take a 48-25 halftime lead.

The Vikings (22-5) held Thousand Oaks to a season-low five points during the third quarter, pulling to 53-36 midway through the third quarter, but could get no closer. The Lancers broke the game open again with an 8-2 run early in the fourth quarter.

Jessica Trippet led Marina with 18 points. The senior center also had 18 rebounds.

Marina held Jones to four points during the second half. Jones had made three three-point baskets during the second quarter.

No. 7 Crenshaw 58, Kennedy 54--Senior Cathleen Grice made four free throws in the final 14 seconds to lead Crenshaw (23-2) to a City 4-A victory over Kennedy (18-6) at Monroe High.

Shaneya Harris, a senior, had 33 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals for Kennedy.

No. 8 Playa del Rey St. Bernard 63, No. 15 Ojai Nordhoff 29--Kelly Shimabukuro, a senior guard, scored 15 points to lead St. Bernard (24-4) over Nordhoff (23-2) in a Southern Section IV-AA game at Santa Clara High.

Shonte Tippie and Chaka Smith scored 23 and 18 points, respectively, to lead Jefferson (25-3) to a 67-56, City 3-A victory over Manual Arts (15-3) at Hamilton High. . . . Senior forward Lenora Tuisaloo scored a game-high 14 points and also had 10 rebounds to lead Narbonne (16-10) to a 64-38, City 3-A victory over Monroe (12-4) at Kennedy High. . . . In the final 21 seconds, Darvena Merritt made a basket and a free throw to lead North Hollywood (21-6) to a 62-57 City 4-A victory over Dorsey (18-8) at Birmingham High. . . . Neece Bonds scored 15 points to lead Mission Prep (17-6) to a 62-41 Southern Section V-AA victory over Hesperia Christian, (12-12). . . . Barbara Thomas had 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead Pasadena Poly (25-3) to a 53-45 Southern Section V-AA victory over Capistrano Valley Christian (19-7) at St. Margaret’s High.
