Osterode replaces Doug Case, who went 13-25 in two years at Rancho Alamitos. He will be helped by the return of four starters, including Brown, a two-time all-league player who hit over .500 in league last season. Brown has signed a letter of intent to play football at Fresno State, but baseball might be his best sport. When he’s not roaming the outfield, Brown will be Osterode’s top pitcher. He has shut out Kennedy the last two seasons, but Osterode said Brown is still more of a thrower than a pitcher. Byrd (.285) will lead off and play center. Freeman (.400, three homers, 17 stolen bases) moves from the outfield to shortstop. “We’ll be aggressive,” Osterode said. “(Brown, Freeman and Byrd) will have the green light.” Winemiller (four homers), who will bat cleanup, has been a terror at the plate but a liability on defense. Taylor, a crafty left-hander, is the No. 2 pitcher and McCrea rounds out a shaky staff. “I don’t think we’ll win many 1-0 games, but maybe some 10-9 games,” Osterode said.
