La Quinta missed the playoffs for the first time in 15 years under Demarest, but still finished 15-9 and came within a pitch of making playoffs--a home run by Santiago’s Louie Perez beat the Aztecs on the final day. “We had a real good year, but according to our standards it wasn’t that good,” Demarest said. “The seasons of automatically winning 20 games and finishing first or second in league are over. We must realize that we now can win or lose to anyone in our league. Demographics are changing things.” Six starters return from last year, including Granger, who has started since his freshman year, and Livernois, a first-team all-league pitcher. “We have people back. Unfortunately, the people above us (Kennedy and Garden Grove) also have people back,” Demarest said. Stiles, coming off arm problems, will be the No. 2 starter and Granger should be No. 3. Demarest will also try to get some innings out of C.J. Livernois and De La Cruz. “Our offense is not great, but our program has always been built on pitching and defense,” Demarest said.
