OUTLOOK

Nelson, in his 17th season with the Matadors, has won only eight games in his last two years after averaging 12 victories in his first 14 campaigns. The prospects for this season aren’t much better than the last two, but this year’s club has Nelson excited. “It could be that we’ll be a solid, average ballclub,” he said. “I have good kids this year. They look like they’ll be easy to coach. It’s something we haven’t had here the last couple seasons. If there weren’t good kids this year, I wouldn’t be here.” Nelson won’t have center fielder Frank Nguyen, who probably would have been his best player, due to academic ineligibility. Of the players Nelson has, Baughman is probably the most talented. Baughman, who played outfield and shortstop last year, moves to third base. Caldwell (first base), Francisco (shortstop) and Rinkovsky (second base), who was ineligible last year, should give Bolsa Grande a strong infield. Moore, who has developed a knuckleball and grown four inches since last season, will likely be Nelson’s ace. “When things get dull, we sit around and watch him grow,” Nelson said. “If he continues to progress, it could be interesting.”
