COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Beard Directs Pierce to Sweep of Santa Monica in Volleyball

Rob Beard had 19 kills to lead host Pierce College to a 15-8, 15-13, 15-7 victory over Santa Monica in a Western State Conference men’s volleyball match Wednesday night.

Beard also had a superb .500 hitting percentage for the Brahmas, the defending state champions.

Rick Phillips added 15 kills for Pierce (7-0, 4-0 in conference play).

BASEBALL

Ventura 4, Moorpark 3--Nacho Garcia drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth of a WSC game after an error by Raider shortstop Brian Vasey.

Tied 3-3, Ventura began the inning with a double by Mike Muncy, a transfer from Moorpark. Raider pitcher Dan Haas, who was charged with loss, then recorded an out and intentionally walked Chris Mace to set up the double play.

Ron Tegland hit a grounder toward the hole that bounced off Vasey’s glove, loading the bases for Garcia, who singled down the third-base line.

Pierce 21, Oxnard 8--Herman Merchan was four for seven with four runs batted in to lead the Brahmas (4-5, 2-2) in a WSC game. Pierce leadoff batter Carl Grissom, who scored six runs, Brian Basowski and Louie Tapia each had three hits. Tapia had his first home run of the season.

Oxnard (2-8, 0-4) scored six runs in the sixth inning, but Pierce’s Bryan Corey put out the fire.

CS Dominguez Hills 7, The Master’s 2--The Mustangs (10-4) led, 2-1, when the Toros, ranked 13th in Division II, scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth. Corey Woinarowicz keyed the inning with a three-run double. Starting pitcher Juan Soriano, winner Eric Duncan (3-1) and Tom Fulkerson combined on a two-hitter.

SOFTBALL

Antelope Valley 6, Pierce 0--Heather Meyer (3-0) pitched a one-hitter and catcher Hannah Griffith drove in three runs to lead the Marauders (4-1) in a nonconference game.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

CS Northridge 7, CS Fullerton 2--The visiting Matadors won five of six in singles play to improve their dual-match record to 6-0.
