Hunt, formerly an assistant coach, takes over for Tim Green, who resigned at the end of last season. The new coach has quality, but not quantity, to work with. “We only have 30 kids in our entire program,” Hunt said. “We’ll have only two teams--varsity and either junior varsity or freshman-sophomore--instead of three teams. It’s definitely a rebuilding year because our numbers are so low at the junior and senior level.” Hunt will likely have a total of eight juniors and seniors on the varsity along with eight sophomores. He has several concerns, beginning with the basics. “We’re working on catching the ball and throwing the ball,” he said. “We’re working on fundamentals. We have to improve there first.” Offense also is a concern. Four of the team’s top hitters--Matt Jaglowski, Mike Meyers, Jeff Pickens and Luis Vasquez--have graduated. But the Mustangs have one of the league’s top pitchers returning in Harber, a 6-foot-5 three-sport standout. Harber has the strength and power to challenge two of the league’s other top pitchers--Century’s Tom Reimers and Trabuco Hills’ Carey Smith. “Matt has looked good in practice so far,” Hunt said. “He’ll be our dominant pitcher.” Steck, who was promoted from the junior varsity, also will pitch.
