4-A CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS : Crenshaw Captures Boys’, Girls’ Titles : Boys’ basketball: Cougars roll over Dorsey, 92-71, for their 12th City Championship and heads to the Southern California Regionals on Tuesday.

The Crenshaw High boys’ basketball team captured its 12th City crown in 23 years with a 92-71 victory Friday night over Dorsey in the 4-A championship game at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Chalking up its third win of the season over the Dons, the Cougars, seeded No. 1 in the playoffs, won their first City Title since 1989. In 1984-85, Crenshaw took both the boys’ and girls’ 4-A titles in the same season, the only City team ever to achieve that feat. The school did it again Friday and will play Tuesday in the Southern California Regionals.

Dorsey scored four quick points to open the game, but Tremaine Fowlkes scored seven of his 22 points in the first quarter to give Crenshaw a 19-14 lead.

“I was a little nervous because this is my first championship game,” Fowlkes said. “I wanted to play well because I was in the Sports Arena.”

All-City point guard Kenya Wilkins, who finished with 15 points, sank two free throws to bring Dorsey to within four, 20-24, with 5:25 remaining in the second quarter. Guard Maurice Robinson made six of eight free throws to boost Crenshaw to a 43-34 halftime lead.

A layup by John Mundy with 3:04 left in the third quarter cut Crenshaw’s lead to 51-49, but forward Reggie McFerren hit two three-pointers during a 10-2 run to extend the Cougar’s lead to 64-53.

Crenshaw used free throws in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Forward Kristaan Johnson, who scored a game-high 28 points in the game, made 13 of 14 free throws in the final period.

“I was concentrating on hitting the bottom of the net,” Johnson said. “I was on.”

Guard Terrell McKnight hit a three-pointer with 4:14 left to ignite a nine-point Dorsey run to shave Crenshaw’s lead to 81-69.

However, Crenshaw outscored Dorsey 9-2 from that point as Johnson made six consecutive free throws.

“The team looked great out there,” Crenshaw Coach Willie West said. “It’s a tribute to this team’s character that they can beat a team of Dorsey’s caliber three times in a season.”

In their first meeting, Crenshaw prevailed 80-76 in overtime at Dorsey. In the second game at Crenshaw, the Cougars easily disposed of the Dons, 97-78, sending the message to Dorsey that it was the team to beat heading into the playoffs.

The Cougars outscored their first three playoff opponents--Van Nuys, Fremont and Westchester--by a combined score of 301-189, an average margin of 37 points.

Dorsey, which defeated Fairfax, North Hollywood and Washington to reach the finals, finished its season at 15-12.
