OUTLOOK
The Roadrunners will be hard pressed to repeat their second-place finish, but they should be in the race for a playoff spot. Zuniga is a standout, both as a hitter and pitcher. He was 7-2 with a 1.02 earned-run average during the 1992 regular season. He also hit .338 with 20 runs batted in. Garcia was the team’s second leading hitter last season with a .354 average. Both were first-team all-league selections, and Ramirez was an honorable mention pick. The Roadrunners will have a lot of inexperience in the lineup. But the talent comes from two successful lower-level teams. Pinedo is the best of the bunch. “He has a real live arm,” Mangram said. “All he needs is confidence. Right now, we’re teaching him a cut fastball, which should make him really tough to hit.” Pitching will be the Roadrunners’ strength. Besides Zuniga and Pinedo, they have Ramirez, who has experience, and Briseno, who is a talented newcomer. “We’re going to have get some things worked out in the preseason,” Mangram said. “We’re so young at some positions, but I think with experience, we’ll be OK.”
