What’s not to like about the Cougars’ chances for a second consecutive league championship? With Irvine, ninth-ranked nationally by USA Today, off to the Sea View League, most South Coast League coaches say Capistrano Valley and Mater Dei are the teams to beat. The teams meet in the league opener March 22 at Capistrano Valley. “Mater Dei is always strong,” said Zamora, who also likes Mission Viejo’s chances for a playoff spot. Hitting is what could give the Cougars an edge over the rest of the pack. Benner hit a team-leading .465 with five home runs and 26 RBIs. If he comes anywhere near those numbers again, Benner said he’ll be more than satisfied. Zamora is moving his slugger, who will play at Cal State Long Beach next season, from third base to left field. The big question is whether the Cougars’ bats can handle the league’s pitching. Or the other way around. “I don’t think too many teams can stop us,” Benner said. “We have some very good hitters.” Flynn and Peter Zamora, the coach’s son, will handle most of the pitching duties for the Cougars.
