Capistrano Valley vs. Crenshaw

SITE--Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5:30 p.m.

RECORDS--Capistrano Valley (24-4), Los Angeles Crenshaw (23-2).

CAPISTRANO VALLEY--Even though Capistrano Valley has proven shooters, including Susan and Katie Scott, surrounding senior guard Angie White, the Cougars rely on White to set the tone. White had uncharacteristically poor shooting performances in Capistrano Valley’s last two games and will have to rediscover her touch early and stay focused in order to trip up Crenshaw.

CRENSHAW--The Los Angeles City 4-A champion had lost in three trips to the finals since 1987 before its 72-50 victory over North Hollywood Saturday. It was Crenshaw’s second title. Senior guard Cathleen Grice, who averaged 19 points going into the championship game, scored 26 and pulled down five rebounds against North Hollywood.

KEY TO THE GAME--Capistrano Valley has three starters 5-11 or taller; Crenshaw’s starting lineup features three players 5-8 or shorter. Capistrano Valley must take advantage of its height and break the press.

CONSENSUS--Crenshaw’s only losses have been at the hands of two teams that have caused nothing but problems for Orange County teams. Second-seeded Crenshaw lost to Morningside, which defeated Western, Cypress and Newport Harbor en route to its Southern Section III-AA title, and loss by a point to Lynwood, the team that beat Capistrano Valley by 17 in the I-AA championship.
