North Valley Honors Ramos of San Fernando

Junior guard Javier Ramos of San Fernando High has been selected the most valuable player of the North Valley League in a vote of basketball coaches. Ramos averaged 18.2 points to lead the Tigers to the league title and the City Section 3-A Division semifinals.

First-team selections are Trenton Cross and David Horesh of Reseda, Markee Brown and Sam Sarpong of El Camino Real, and Jerome Elliott of San Fernando.

North Hollywood girls’ basketball players Darvena Merritt and Anna Celaya have been named Mid-Valley League co-players of the year. Merritt, a junior forward, averaged 15.3 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. Celaya, a sophomore point guard who averaged 14.7 points, set the school scoring record for sophomores.

College Baseball

UCLA first baseman Ryan McGuire has been selected the national player of the week by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

McGuire, an El Camino Real High graduate, hit eight homers and drove in 22 runs in four games last week. McGuire hit three homers in one game against Arizona, the first time a player from the Pacific 10 Conference accomplished the feat since 1988.

McGuire, a junior preseason All-American, drove in 15 runs in the three-game Arizona series and had two homers earlier in the week in a nonconference game against Loyola Marymount.

Cal State Northridge dropped a notch to No. 13 in Collegiate Baseball’s national poll after losing two of three games to Cal State Sacramento over the weekend.

The Matadors (10-2, 1-2 in Western Athletic Conference play) will play Portland in a nonconference game at Matador Field at 2 p.m. today.

High School Soccer

Oak Park High’s Angelique Helvey and Royal’s Jennifer Evans scored in a high school all-star soccer game Sunday in Arcadia. Westlake goalkeeper Audrey Maxfield had four saves. The match ended in a 2-2 tie.
