COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Aguilar, Halcovich Rescue Canyons

John Aguilar hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning and sophomore right-hander Keith Halcovich worked out of a ninth-inning jam as host College of the Canyons came from behind Tuesday to record a 6-5 victory over Pierce.

Aguilar’s home run in the Western State Conference game capped a three-run rally that gave Canyons (11-2, 8-0 in conference play) a 6-4 lead.

Pierce (5-9, 3-5), which scored three times in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead, threatened in the ninth by advancing runners to first and third with none out.

Halcovich replaced Jason Chandler and retired Jason Cohen on a sacrifice fly to right field. Tommy James then hit into a game-ending double play.

The save was Halcovich’s fourth this season. Chandler improved to 2-0. Canyons has won 10 games in a row.

Aguilar was two for four, including a double and the home run.

Glendale 12, Bakersfield 4--Nicky Moreno was five for five and drove in five runs for host Glendale in a WSC game.

Moreno, a sophomore first baseman, had two singles, two doubles and a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

Teammate Jose Robles had a double, a home run and three runs batted in for Glendale (10-5, 6-3).

Steve Hernandez (2-1) picked up the complete-game victory for the Vaqueros, scattering 10 hits, striking out three batters and walking two.

Santa Barbara City 11, Oxnard 10 (10 innings)--Oxnard fell to 3-11, 1-7 in the WSC game when Jeff Bollengier’s single scored Paul Pierson with two out in the 10th.

Shortstop Jon Chaparro was five for five with a double and two runs scored for the Condors.

Santa Monica 4, Ventura 3--Tighe Curran had a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings, but gave up four consecutive hits in the seventh inning and took the loss in the WSC game at Santa Monica.

Curran (1-3) gave up single runs in the fifth and sixth, although he did not give up a hit in either inning.

Santa Monica scored what turned out to be the winning run in the eighth when, with two out, Dean Davidson walked, stole second, was balked to third, then stole home. Curran allowed four hits, walked three and struck out eight batters for Ventura (5-7, 3-5.)

Mission 4, L.A. City 3--Right-hander Josh Brown (6-0) scattered eight hits while logging his fifth complete game.

Marlon McKinney and Frankie Medina each drove in a run for Mission (13-4, 4-0). Richard Avalos was three for four and scored two runs. Jose Gallegos went two for four, including a double.

The Master’s 10-8, Oklahoma Baptist 6-7--The Mustangs (13-6), who were swept Sunday in a doubleheader by Oklahoma City University--the NAIA’s second-ranked team--bounced back with a sweep of their own, upsetting the No. 3-ranked Bison in Oklahoma.

The Master’s scored four runs in the first inning and four in the third to take a comfortable 8-0 lead in the first game. The Mustangs needed three in the bottom of the seventh to win the second game.

Kenya Hunt’s two-run single tied it, then Hunt scored the game-winner with two out on a fielding error by the Oklahoma Baptist second baseman on Matt Henzie’s ground ball.

Hunt had four hits and five RBIs in the doubleheader, including a double and two-run home run in the first game to help pitcher Mark Redman improve to 4-2.

Reliever Jason Priske (2-0) got the victory in the second game.
