OUTLOOK

It was a forgettable opening weekend for last year’s county No. 1. Friday in a 4-2 victory over Riverside J.W. North in the Loara tournament, Brannan, who has signed with the University of Miami, struck out nine batters in four innings but also hit four batters. “There must have been 30 scouts at the game, and the kid lost it,” Dodd said. Saturday, Daedelow, an all-league shortstop, told Dodd he didn’t feel well and couldn’t play. Later, Dodd was ejected in the second game of a doubleheader with Century for arguing a batter’s interference call. Sunday, Daedelow told Dodd he had the chicken pox and will be out two weeks. Brannan hit two home runs and drove in four runs in his first four games. The pitching staff is better than last year’s, which featured Jon Ward (Cal State Fullerton) and Derek Glascoe (Oklahoma). Brewer, a left-hander, pitched well in the second game against Century and earned the victory. Hart, the team’s No. 2 pitcher, allowed only one hit and no earned runs in five innings in the opener but failed to get a decision.
