The St. Francis soccer team had its season end last week with a 5-0 defeat to Santa Ana Valley in the semifinals of the Southern Section playoffs.

St. Francis, under Coach Glen Appels, had given up only one goal through the first three rounds of the playoffs. The loss against Santa Ana Valley marked the first time this season that the Golden Knights were shut out.

St. Francis finished 19-3-2.

The Glendale High boys’ and girls’ track teams combined for 165 points to win a nonleague triangular meet with Crescenta Valley and Hoover.

Glendale won the annual meet for the sixth time in 10 years. Crescenta Valley was second with 117 1/2 points. Hoover finished with 47 1/2.

All-star basketball games that will include senior boys and girls from 30 high schools schools, including seven in the Glendale area, will be played March 27 at La Canada High.

The girls’ portion of the West San Gabriel Valley All-Star Classic will begin at 6 p.m. The boys’ game will start at 8.

Players from Glendale, Hoover, La Canada, St. Francis, Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart and Glendale Academy will participate.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Stephanie Ball of the Glendale College women’s basketball team was selected first-team All-Western State Conference by league coaches.

Ball, a sophomore, averaged 14.4 points a game for the Vaqueros.

Makela Theriault of Glendale, a freshman from Verdugo Hills High, was selected to the second team.

The Glendale College baseball team improved its record to 9-5 and 5-3 in the Western State Conference with victories last week over Oxnard, Moorpark and Santa Barbara.

The Vaqueros, under Coach Steve Coots, play Ventura today and Pierce on Saturday.

The Glendale men’s and women’s track teams travel to Santa Monica on Friday for a WSC meet with Santa Monica and Cuesta.

Glendale finished second behind Bakersfield in a WSC quadrangular meet Friday at Glendale that also included West Los Angeles and College of the Canyons. In the men’s meet, Bakersfield scored 97 points, Glendale had 46. The Bakersfield women defeated Glendale, 68-49 1/2.

COLLEGES

Occidental diver Marra Stankus will compete today in the NCAA Division III championships at Emory University in Atlanta.

Stankus, a junior from Middlebury, Conn., will compete in the one- and three-meter springboard events.

Stankus is the first Occidental diver to compete in the nationals since 1946, when Sammy Lee was attending the school.

Stephanie Francis of the Occidental women’s basketball team was selected first-team All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by league coaches.

Francis averaged 15.4 points for the Tigers, who finished 13-12 and 7-5 in conference.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Nancy Ekeke, Glendale--Ekeke, a freshman, won the 200- and 400-meter events and was part of the winning 4x100-meter relay team that led Glendale to victory over Crescenta Valley and Hoover in a triangular meet at Glendale High.

Ekeke won the 200 in 26.6 seconds. She won the 400 in 1 minute 5.3 seconds and teamed with Sevana Mailian, Alicia Orrego and Tracy Prindle to win the 4x100-meter relay in 52.08 seconds.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Gilberto Roca, Glendale--Roca won the 5,000-meter event for the Vaqueros during a Western State Conference track meet with Bakersfield, West Los Angeles and College of the Canyons at Glendale.

Roca, a freshman from Glendale High, finished in 15 minutes 39.5 seconds.

MISCELLANY

Three men and three women from the Glendale area were among the top 100 finishers in divisions of last weekend’s Los Angeles Marathon, which attracted more than 19,000 runners.

Mario Bueno of Eagle Rock finished 18th in the men’s race in 2 hours 33 minutes 19 seconds. Jose Arriaga of Glendale was 59th (2:46:38) and Rafael Ramos of Glendale was 99th (2:52:21). Catherine Riebling of La Canada was 16th in the women’s race in 3:13:03. Jill Horne of La Canada was 19th (3:14:23) and Marie Romero of La Canada was 38th in (3:24:39).

1. Crescenta Valley: 22-5; Adam Jacobsen scored 34 points as the Falcons advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section playoffs for the first time in 15 years by defeating La Sierra, 97-59. Crescenta Valley lost to Dominguez, 61-51, Tuesday night.

2. La Canada: 23-6; Eric Sanchez scored 19 points as the Spartans advanced to the Southern Section3-A semifinals by defeating Moorpark, 63-51. La Canada lost to Notre Dame, 58-57, Tuesday night.

3. Franklin: 17-9; Johnny Sanders scored 35 points and had 11 rebounds for the Panthers in their71-68 victory over Jefferson in the quarterfinals of the City Section 3-A playoffs. Franklin lost to Banning, 62-52, in the semifinals Tuesday night. 4. St. Francis: 16-10; David Craig was limited to 10 points in a 60-42 Southern Section 3-A quarterfinal defeat by Lompoc, ending one of St. Francis’ most successful seasons. 5. Marshall: 15-9; The Barristers’ season ended with a loss to Jefferson in the first round of theCity 3-A playoffs.

GIRLS

1. La Canada: 19-8; Melissa Lord scored 35 points and had 13 rebounds as La Canada defeated Yucca Valley, 58-41, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section 3-A playoffs. La Canada played Rancho Alamitos in the semifinals Wednesday. 2. Marshall: 20-6; The Barristers, who finished undefeated in the Northern Conference, defeated Fremont in the first round of the City 3-A playoffs, but their season ended with a 48-30 defeat by powerful North Hollywood in the quarterfinals. 3. Crescenta Valley: 18-5; The Falcons beat Torrance in the first round of the Southern Section 2-AA playoffs, but were upset by Burroughs, 42-38, in the second round. 4. Flintridge Sacred Heart: 21-5; Liz Doud scored 16 points and had 19 rebounds for the Tologs in a 47-46 Southern Section 4-AA quarterfinal loss to Pius X. 5. Franklin 14-10; The Panthers’ season ended with a loss to Crenshaw in the City 4-A playoffs.
