Jalen Rose scored 23 points and Jimmy King had seven in overtime as third-ranked Michigan escaped a barrage of three-point baskets to defeat Illinois, 98-97, Wednesday night at Champaign, Ill.

Illinois’ T.J. Wheeler intercepted a long pass with 2.4 seconds to play, but by the time he got the ball to Richard Keene, time had expired and the Illini could not attempt a final shot.

Two free throws by King gave Michigan a 96-91 lead with 36 seconds remaining. Keene stole the ball and made a three-point shot to pull the Illini within two with less than 10 seconds left.

Rose made two free throws to put Michigan up, 98-94, with 5.9 seconds remaining, but Keene made another three-point shot with 2.4 seconds to play.

Chris Webber scored 22 points for the Wolverines, who are 25-4 overall and 14-3 in the Big Ten Conference.

Andy Kaufmann scored 27 points and Deon Thomas had 19 for Illinois (18-11, 11-6), which made 11 of 19 three-point shots.

No. 2 Indiana 99, Michigan State 68--Greg Graham equaled a career high by scoring 32 points to lead the Hoosiers to the Big Ten victory at Bloomington, Ind.

The Hoosiers (27-3, 16-1), already assured of an NCAA tournament berth with one game left in the regular season, made short work of the Spartans (14-12, 6-11), who lost their fifth consecutive game and perhaps any chance of a postseason bid.

The win assured Indiana of the outright Big Ten title.

Indiana forward Alan Henderson, who missed four games after injuring his knee in practice on Feb. 19, played the final six seconds but did not touch the ball.
