New Cypress AD Selbe Quits as Football Coach

Cypress football Coach John Selbe announced his resignation Friday to devote more time to his new position as the school’s athletic director.

Selbe, 39, compiled a career record of 24-43-3 during seven seasons. During his tenure, Cypress failed to qualify for the playoffs from the traditionally strong Empire League but twice finished 5-5.

“Since I was hired as athletic director, my focus is now on that job,” he said. “I’ve redirected my energy to becoming an athletic director.”

Cypress’ enrollment has dropped each year for the last seven seasons, but Selbe said the decline ended this year with the school’s enrollment settling at 1,450 students.

“The releaguing is going to be a big plus for us with Los Alamitos going into the Sunset League,” he said. “Applications are now open for all candidates with a teaching credential. Hopefully, we’ll have a new coach before spring football begins.”
