Pena to Have Elbow Surgery, May Miss Season
Relief pitcher Alejandro Pena of the Pittsburgh Pirates will undergo surgery on his right elbow today in Birmingham, Ala., and is expected to miss the entire season.
Pena, a former Dodger who pitched for the Atlanta Braves the last two seasons, was signed by the Pirates to a one-year, $1.35-million contract as a free agent on Dec. 10. He has not pitched in an exhibition game this spring.
The Pirates have said Pena has elbow tendinitis. However, Pena said he has been told by Dr. James Andrews, who will perform the surgery, that a bone chip is embedded in an elbow ligament.
“All I can do is try to come back next year,” Pena said.
