CAMARILLO : Hawaii Junior High Band Will Perform

Share

A junior high school band from Hawaii that raised funds for the instrumental music program in Camarillo schools will have the opportunity to meet Camarillo students who benefited from the band’s donations.

The 45-member ninth-grade band from Iolani School in Honolulu will be in Camarillo on Monday and Tuesday, performing at three schools and at a free evening concert.

One year ago, the Hawaiian group raised $400 for band instruction in the Pleasant Valley Elementary School District after they learned the music program could be eliminated because of school-budget cuts, Camarillo resident Annette Okamura said.

Okamura has been an avid supporter of the Pleasant Valley band program and her nephew in Hawaii suggested to his fellow band members that they raise money to send to Camarillo, Okamura said. The Pleasant Valley school district canceled band instruction in 1991, but reinstated it in January, 1992, on the condition that parent and community donations pay for the entire music program.

On Monday, two bands from Camarillo schools will perform for the Iolani group at 6 p.m. at El Descanso School.

On Tuesday, the Hawaiian music students will play at various Camarillo schools and at a public concert at 7 p.m. at El Descanso School.
