BASEBALL : Huntington Park Edges Fremont on Matos No-Hitter

Armando Matos pitched a no-hitter and had 12 strikeouts as Huntington Park beat defending City 3-A champion Fremont, 4-3, in a Southeastern Conference game Thursday at Huntington Park.

Juan Garcia, who had two hits, drove in the winning run with a single to left in the seventh inning. Fremont benefited from two errors to score three runs in the fifth inning.

Banning 2, Crenshaw 1--Mario Soto and Rick Knatros combined on a three-hitter and Juan Vasquez and Alex Garibay each had a run-scoring single as host Banning won a Southern Pacific Conference game.

Vasquez and Garibay’s RBI hits each came with two outs.

Soto pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits and five walks. He struck out six. With runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh inning, Knatros got Mark Porter to hit a fly to center for the final out.

Crenshaw had the bases loaded with two outs in top of the sixth, but Mark Porter was forced out at second on Steve Miles’ grounder to shortstop to end the inning.

Tim Gaulth threw a four-hitter in defeat, striking out five and walking three. Shortstop Carl Askew had an RBI double for the Cougars only run.
