PREP ROUNDUP : Offense Leads University to Sweep

Jason Young had six hits, drove in four runs and scored six, and Steve Hagins had five hits and seven RBIs as University overwhelmed Bolsa Grande, 13-2 and 14-4, Saturday in a nonleague high school baseball doubleheader at University.

Scott MacDermott and Chris Toomey combined on a one-hitter in the first game, and Spencer Illingworth struck out nine in five innings in the second for University (6-2).

Adam Gilbert had a two-run double for Bolsa Grande (1-4-1) in the second game.

In other nonleague baseball:

Corona Del Mar 8-9, Norwalk 7-3--Dave Angeloni had four hits, including two home runs, and four RBIs in the doubleheader for Corona Del Mar (4-2).

Kennedy 13-10, Magnolia 2-2--R.J. Gonzales had six hits and four RBIs in the doubleheader sweep for visiting Kennedy (4-5).

La Quinta 9-9, Newport Harbor 0-6--In the first game, La Quinta (6-2) first baseman Zane Parkin, who had three hits and two runs scored, hit a three-run home run in the first. Winning pitcher Greg Stiles allowed five hits and struck out six in six innings for host La Quinta.

La Quinta’s Jim Livernois had five RBIs in the second game and hit a grand slam in the fourth. Newport Harbor is 1-6.

Liberty Christian 18-12, Vista Tri-City Christian 0-2--Gabe Baltodano had six hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader for host Liberty Christian (5-3). John Church pitched a five-inning two-hitter in in the first game, and Joe Ruiz earned his third victory in the second for the Minutemen.

Newhall Hart 9-4, Huntington Beach 4-3--Ryan Brannan hit a home run for Huntington Beach (4-3) in the first game. Host Newhall Hart is 6-1.

In the Garden Grove softball tournament:

Canyon 1, Western 0--With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Crystal Aldaco singled to left field to score Annette Bailey for Canyon (5-4) in a first-round victory. Western is 2-7.

Allison Rudd had three RBIs, and Jamie Al-Moradi and Nina Lindenberg scored three runs each for the Comanches in an 11-3 victory over Bolsa Grande in the quarterfinals.

Dana Hills 12, Santa Ana 0--Heather Buchanon had three hits, four RBIs and four stolen bases, and Beccy Gordon pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts for Dana Hills (5-2), which advanced to Saturday’s semifinals. Jenine Perez pitched a three-hitter to lead the Dolphins to a 1-0 upset of Cerritos Gahr, the top-seeded team in the upper bracket, in a first-round game.

Loara 2, La Quinta 1--Tammy Hyde struck out seven to earn the victory for Loara (7-1) in a first-round game, but the Saxons lost to Long Beach Millikan, 4-3, in the quarterfinals. Gina Bird had three hits and a run scored in the two games for Loara.

San Clemente 3, Garden Grove 2--Samantha Mercier hit a one-out single in the seventh inning to drive in the winning run for San Clemente in a first-round victory.

Santa Ana 9, Calvary Chapel 1--Stacy Lumley hit a three run home run in the first, and Cynthia Trotter had two hits and three runs scored for Santa Ana (2-5) in a first-round victory.

In consolation play:

Garden Grove 11, Estancia 1 (5, mercy)--Mandy Mendoza had a third-inning grand slam to lead Garden Grove (5-2).

In nonleague softball:

La Habra 6, Whittier Christian 0--Danielle Ortega pitched a one-hitter and struck out 15 for La Habra (5-2).

Vista Tri-City Christian 8-9, Liberty Christian 3-7--Becky Rendon had two hits and two RBIs in the doubleheader for host Liberty Christian (3-4).
