Ken Sharrar, an assistant football coach at San Clemente High, has been named head coach at Brethren Christian, Athletic Director Robin Davis said Monday.

Sharrar, 31, an English teacher at Brethren, replaces Mike Roark, who resigned last month.

“I’m humbled by the opportunity to come back and coach at Brethren,” said Sharrar, who coached the Eagle junior varsity in 1991. “And it was an honor to be chosen from that list of candidates.”

Sharrar was one of five coaches interviewed for the job.

“It came down to a very difficult decision,” Davis said. “But we (selection committee members) felt that Ken is Brethren Christian’s football future, and that he will do a very good job.”

Sharrar was an assistant coach last season at San Clemente under Coach Mark McElroy, helping the Tritons to one of their best seasons in the past several years. They were 4-5-1, missing the playoffs by one game.

Sharrar began his career at Capistrano Valley, where he was a wide receiver in 1977 and ’78 and an assistant coach under Dick Enright in 1980 and ’81.

He also was an assistant coach at Ocean View and Cal State Long Beach and was a USC graduate assistant coach in 1986.

His only previous experience as a head coach was at Long Beach St. Anthony in 1985. St. Anthony was 6-4 and made the Southern Section playoffs in Sharrar’s only season.
