SIMI VALLEY : Action Deferred on Dog Kennel Permit

Share

The Simi Valley City Council has tabled action on a couple’s request to continue operating a dog kennel and rescue operation over the objections of some neighbors.

In November, Simi Valley planning commissioners denied a permit to Thomas and Christina Dunn, saying they believed that the kennel next to the Dunns’ house in the 5000 block of Barnard Street was a commercial operation that was prohibited in a residential area.

But after an appeal hearing Dec. 14, the council tentatively voted to approve the permit. City staff members then conducted an environmental review of the kennel’s noise, odors and other impacts.

The Dunns have said their goal is to rescue unwanted Alaskan malamutes. The couple also help county officials by boarding animals displaced by fire, floods and hazardous spills. They have cared for animals at their Simi Valley house for 10 years.

The delay Monday came after neighbors submitted more material in opposition to the city Friday.
