NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Azusa Pacific, Pomona Lose in Tournaments

The Azusa Pacific University men’s basketball team and the Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team lost in national tournament games last week.

Azusa Pacific finished 30-4 after losing to the University of Minnesota-Morris, 83-68, in the first round of the 32-team National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics championship tournament at Kansas City, Mo.

Bob Terry, an Azusa forward who was the District 3 player of the year, was selected third-team All-American.

Pomona lost to North Dakota State, 91-55, in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals at Fargo, N.D. Pomona finished 27-3.

Tom Eide, a junior outfielder for the Pomona baseball team, has a 24-game hitting streak entering the start of today’s Mesa State tournament at Grand Junction, Colo.

Eide, a transfer from Chaffey College, is batting .400 and is seven games shy of the school record set by Larry Beardman in 1983. The NCAA Division II record is 33 set by Bobby Green of Florida Southern in 1985.

Bellevue, Nevada Las Vegas, Mesa State, New Mexico Highlands, Northern Colorado and Metro State are also participating in the tournament.

Pomona is in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. with a 6-3 record. The Broncos (14-11) are half a game ahead of UC Riverside (5-3) and Cal State Dominguez (5-3).

A boys’ soccer team that included players from Pasadena, Altadena and La Canada won the American Youth Soccer Organization’s tri-sectional championship last weekend at Camarillo.

The team of 13- and 14-year-olds, representing Region 13, defeated Ventura, 5-1, in the semifinals and Palm Springs, 2-1, in overtime for the championship.

Arnaldo Barco scored four goals and Damion Jovell one in the victory over Ventura. Barco scored a goal in the final against Palm Springs, with Jovell scoring the game-winner off an assist from Tim Dultz.

A Region 13 boys’ team for ages 9 and 10, and Region 13 girls’ teams for ages 9 and 10, and 13 and 14, also advanced to the tri-sectional tournament but lost in the semifinals or final.

About 125 teams from Southern California will participate in a Spring Break tournament this weekend in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl and Muir High. Matches begin at 7:45 a.m. and continue throughout the day.

Rosa Cazares, a cross-country runner for Cal State Los Angeles, was selected to the NCAA Division II Academic All-American team.

Cazares, who finished sixth in the 5,000 meters at last fall’s Western Regional meet, had a 3.44 grade-point average. She has a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and is completing work for a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language.

Sixteen boys and 16 girls from San Gabriel Valley high schools have been selected to participate in the West San Gabriel Valley all-star basketball games for seniors Saturday at La Canada High.

The girls game begins at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8.

The boys East team, which will be coached by Bill Duwe of Pasadena, includes Ryan Becker of San Marino, Matt Campbell and Jeff Provenzano of Arcadia, Gariand Djemet of Southwestern Academy, Jamil Matthews of Marshall Fundamental, Matt McDevitt of South Pasadena, Justin Rawcliffe of Monrovia, Tony Shen of Temple City, Phil Su of San Gabriel, Otto Suarez of LaSalle, and Treyvone Towns and Tyrone Williams of Pasadena. David Phuong of South Pasadena is an alternate.

Erik Heger of Pasadena Poly and Kacie Motley and Michael O’Quinn of Muir will play for the West team, which includes players from the Glendale-La Canada area.

The girls East team, coached by Lloyd Higgins of Monrovia, includes Kym Aoki of South Pasadena, Marianne Chandler of Arcadia, Lisl Cochrane-Bond and Barbara Thomas of Pasadena Poly, Mamawi Duffy and Carla Smith of Pasadena, Andrea Macciola of Maranatha, Krista Poehler of Westridge, Pat Sencion of San Gabriel, Danyelle Smith and Shaleen Williams of Monrovia and Taya Woods of Blair. Chrys Hodges of Blair is an alternate.

Tamara Maldanado of Alhambra and Patrice McDuel and Cheralyn McGarity will play for the West team.

The Pride of the Foothills Spring Run, featuring a 5-K, 10-K, half-marathon and 2-K Fun Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday in Glendora.

The event includes $1,600 in prize money and medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in nine age groups.

Athletes from more than 80 high schools are expected to participate in the 51st annual Pasadena games track and field meet Saturday at Occidental College.

A golf tournament sponsored by the El Monte/South El Monte Chamber of Commerce will be played April 23 at San Dimas Canyon golf club.

The event will use a best-ball format and also includes a dinner and awards presentation. The cost is $75.

A pro-am celebrity tennis and golf tournament that will benefit shelters for battered women and children will be played April 30 and May 1 at La Verne Country Club.

Tournament proceeds will aid the WINGS shelters in eastern Los Angeles County and San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, will be staged June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants 50 and older are eligible to compete in track and field, race walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball and ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division, and winners will qualify for the state championships that will be contested in San Diego in September.

The Pasadena games also will include race walking and tennis for handicapped athletes and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge and ballroom dancing.
