DIGEST : Ventura’s Curry Honored as State Co-Player of Year

Ventura College forward Calvin Curry has been selected as the J.C. Athletic Bureau’s co-men’s state basketball player of the year with Columbia guard Roddie Anderson.

Curry, a 6-foot-6 sophomore from Compton High, led Ventura (37-2) to the state final, where the Pirates lost to Columbia, 97-88.

Curry averaged 21.3 points and 6.4 rebounds a game.

Ventura freshman Brandon Jessie was named to the all-state team and Canyons sophomore Rasaan Hall earned honorable mention honors.

Jessie, a 6-5 forward, averaged 16.2 points and 9.3 rebounds. Hall, a 6-4 swingman, averaged 14.5 points and 5.4 rebounds.

Andre Chevalier, Cal State Northridge’s top scorer and the school’s all-time assists leader, was honored as the Matadors’ most valuable player Wednesday night at the team’s awards banquet.

Chevalier, a 6-foot junior guard, averaged 13.9 points, had a team-high 113 assists and made 46 steals for Northridge, which finished 10-17 in its third season as a Division I independent.

James Morris and Chris Yard shared honors as the squad’s top defensive players, freshman Robert Hill was named most inspirational and Peter Micelli was selected most improved. Anthony Moten won the coaches’ award.

Chevalier also received recognition for leading the Matadors in free-throw percentage (83.2%) and assist average (4.2). Yard was honored for leading the team in field-goal percentage (48.8%) and rebounding average (6.3), and Brooklyn McLinn won the sportsmanship award.

Baseball

Cal Lutheran is ranked first in the NCAA Division III, according to the latest poll by the American Baseball Coaches Assn.

Volleyball

The men’s match between third-ranked Cal State Northridge and fourth-ranked Pepperdine tonight will be broadcast live starting at 7:30 on the Prime Ticket cable television network.
