Toros Take Aim at Top Team in CCAA

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team is scheduled to play California Collegiate Athletic Assn. leader Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the third-ranked team in NCAA Division II, today and Saturday in Carson.

The teams will play a single game at 2:30 p.m. today and a doubleheader at noon Saturday.

Dominguez Hills (18-10) is tied for second in the CCAA with UC Riverside at 5-3. San Luis Obispo is 4-2. Pomona leads the conference at 6-3.

The Toros have won three consecutive nonconference games. Dominguez Hills swept a doubleheader from Northern Colorado on Tuesday and defeated Metro State, 10-0, on Wednesday.

Dominguez Hills has been led by senior outfielder Corey Woinarowicz, who extended his hitting streak to 22 games against Metro State. He tied the record set by teammate Ariel Martin last week.

Toro junior first baseman Greg Bergeron is batting .435 with a team-leading 39 hits and a .569 on-base percentage. Sophomore pitcher Scott Veeder has a 3-3 record and 1.76 earned-run average.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team will travel to Hayward to compete in the Cal State Hayward tournament today through Sunday.

The Toros (10-9-1, 3-5 in CCAA play) have been led by senior first baseman Melissa Punch, who is batting .462. Senior center fielder Tina Baca is batting .378 and leads the team in runs batted in with 10. Pitcher Cindy Hover is 4-3 with an 0.87 earned-run average.

The Loyola Marymount men’s volleyball team will compete in the four-team Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne tournament today and Saturday in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Lions (4-11) will open tournament play tonight against host Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne (13-6). Loyola plays Ball State (13-6) on Saturday.

Loyola has been led by sophomore outside hitter Jason McEntee, who has a team-leading .322 hitting percentage and ranks ninth in the nation in kill average at 5.1.

The Loyola Marymount women’s tennis team will play host to Oregon and Nevada in nonconference matches Saturday in Westchester.

The Lions (7-8) meet Oregon at 10 a.m. and Nevada at 2 p.m. Loyola, which has won seven of nine matches, has been led by sophomore Jennifer Saberon, who is 9-0 in singles play and has combined with teammate Julie Oshiro for an 8-0 record in doubles.

Juniors of all experience levels can participate in the second annual Palos Verdes junior tennis clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. April 3 at the Palos Verdes Tennis Club, 3303 Via Campesina.

The cost is $25.

The clinic will be led by Jim Pugh, a former Wimbledon doubles champion.

Proceeds will benefit the Harbor Foundation for the Retarded in Harbor City.

Harbor College is offering a seven-week certified sailing instruction program for all experience levels on Saturdays starting April 24 at the Long Beach Marina.

South Bay Youth Basketball will conduct its basketball shooting and fundamentals camp for boys and girls in kindergarten through eighth grade from noon to 5 p.m. April 5-9 at Manhattan Beach Intermediate School, 1431 15th St., Manhattan Beach.

The camp director will be Chris Keldorf, an All-Southern Section selection in 1992 at St. Bernard High.

All ages can participate in the fifth annual Walk for Life from 8 to 10 a.m. April 3 at Torrance Beach.

Participants may walk, jog, roller-skate or wheelchair over a 3-K course for the two-hour period.

Proceeds will go to the Pregnancy Help Center and Helpline of the South Bay and Casa de los Angelitos, a home for pregnant women, in Harbor City.
